what is talking therapy?

In a therapy session you will be able to pay attention to yourself, hear yourself, and safely express your emotions, thoughts and fears. For many people, simply speaking freely brings relief and decreases pressure and stress.

Being listened to, heard and understood, are integral to emotional well-being.  Talking therapy is not just a process of dealing with problems or eliminating symptoms, it is also about developing greater fulfilment and satisfaction with life, developing self-trust, self-awareness and creating new possibilities.  It is about empowering you, and helping you to help yourself.

Talking therapy is not about being told what to do; it is an active collaboration with the clinician. To make therapy as effective as possible, it is important to be honest and open about your most private thoughts and behaviours. All talking therapy should be tailored to meet the needs and wants of the client.   In order to do this effectively and responsibly, your clinician should be able to work flexibly with your particular unique situation, and with a focus that is matched to your goals.
It is part of being human that we can find ourselves facing a crisis or feeling distressed or confused or simply stuck in some way or another.  But it is not necessary to try to navigate difficulties alone.  When difficulties arise and our existing coping strategies fall short, the perspective, presence and support of another human being are invaluable.

Neuroscience has now provided evidence to substantiate what the profession of psychology and psychotherapy has been saying for a long time - Change is possible. Neuroscience has also proved that human action is often driven by psychological processes beyond our immediate awareness, which means that increasing your self-awareness, and with practice, you can rewire your thought patterns and start to behave in more adaptive or productive ways.  With increased self awareness it becomes possible to identify and interrupt thought patterns and then try out new ways of thinking and being.

How To Decide Between Counselling Psychologist, Counsellor, or Psychotherapist?

The main thing is that you feel comfortable with the person you choose to work with and think you will be able to form a trusting relationship with that person.
Some ways of working involve looking at the past and previous experiences to help to make sense of what is happening now, other ways are more involved in looking at what is happening now, or finding practical solutions to symptoms.  You will need a practitioner who is able to be flexible and fully understands your needs.
